Comedian Stephen Colbert fired back at Elon Musk’s plan to shrink the federal government via the Department of Government Efficiency during a recent “Late Show” appearance. The audience jeered at the mention of Musk, and Colbert quipped that it was the sound of Tesla sales plummeting.
Colbert claimed that DOGE has been laying off government workers without clear reasons, causing understaffed agencies to struggle to find replacement employees. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention even sent emails to 180 former employees asking them to return to their old jobs, with a formal apology.
The comedian also criticized the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is in the midst of mass layoffs despite having recently expanded services to reach an all-time high and boosted trust among its constituents. Colbert mocked Musk’s approach, saying “If it ain’t broke, let me try!” The joke was part of Colbert’s Thursday night monologue, aimed at ridiculing Musk’s plan.
