Cole Escola’s Tony nominations for his role as Mary Todd Lincoln in ‘Oh, Mary!’ are a dream come true. The play, which Escola wrote and originated Off-Broadway before transferring to Broadway, received five nods, including one for Escola’s cast member Conrad Ricamora.
Nominated for Best Play, ‘Oh, Mary!’ is a raucous reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln as a wannabe cabaret singer. The production explores what would happen if Abraham Lincoln’s assassination wasn’t so devastating to his wife. Escola first landed on the idea in 2009 and developed it into a show that premiered at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in February 2024.
Escola took time off from the production this winter, but returned to the role April 8 after Betty Gilpin and Tituss Burgess played Mary Todd Lincoln during their absence. The actor expressed relief upon returning to the role, saying it felt like a dream come true. Escola has spoken about how he was nervous but ultimately found his character’s presence in the theater.
The Tony nominations have left Escola feeling “overwhelmingly emotional” but also excited for the future of ‘Oh, Mary!’. Although he acknowledges that some people may be tired of the show, Escola hopes it will continue to thrive and possibly lead to a film adaptation or more performances by other actresses.
