Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth opens up about his experience playing Dr. Jim Swire, a real-life hero who became the spokesman for the UK victims’ families in the new Peacock series “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth”.
Firth felt an incredible sense of responsibility after meeting Swire and his wife, Jane, whom he portrayed in the show. He described their initial meeting as getting to know each other, with Firth saying he was immediately struck by Swire’s courage, integrity, and dedication to finding the truth.
The actor admired how Swire was willing to accept new information, even if it conflicted with his previous understanding. “It’s very tempting when you feel passionate about something to want to stay the course, but he didn’t do that,” Firth said. “He let evidence and facts speak to him, even if that meant profoundly changing course.”
Firth found it challenging to portray Swire, saying he felt “way out of my depth” initially. However, he credits well-written scripts, meticulous direction, and a talented team for helping him navigate the story.
Executive producer Gareth Neame also opened up about his inspiration for the series, recalling the midnight news of the 1988 bombing that left 259 people dead. He hopes the show will offer a fresh perspective on the tragedy, which has been extensively covered in journalism, books, and documentaries.
“We’re not just retelling the story,” Neame said. “We’re exploring individual stories within this larger narrative.” The series blends genres, starting with a shocking portrait of family grief before morphing into an investigative thriller and courtroom drama.
