College football coaches are the faces of the sport, and this season’s top contenders have led their teams to impressive victories. Here are the top 10 coaches in college football entering the 2025 season.
At number one is Kirby Smart, Georgia’s head coach, who has won two national championships in his nine years leading the Bulldogs. The team has made four College Football Playoff appearances and finished in the AP poll top 10 for eight consecutive seasons.
Ryan Day of Ohio State follows closely at number two, with a career win percentage of 87.5% and a national championship in his first year as head coach. Dabo Swinney of Clemson rounds out the top three, with nine ACC Championships and six College Football Playoff appearances to his name.
Dan Lanning’s Oregon team has won 85.4% of its games during his three seasons at the helm, making him one of the top coaches in college football. Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame squad made it to the National Championship Game last season, while Steve Sarkisian’s Texas team is poised to compete for a national title.
Other notable coaches include Kalen DeBoer’s Alabama team, which finished with a disappointing 9-4 record despite starting the season as the number five team in the AP poll. James Franklin’s Penn State team made it to the College Football Playoff semifinals last season and returns most of its key players for this year’s matchup.
Brian Kelly’s LSU team is still seeking its first national title under his leadership, but his resume speaks for itself. With a new quarterback returning and plenty of star power, the Tigers have a good chance of breaking through in 2025. Finally, Curt Cignetti’s Indiana team made a surprising leap to the top 10 with an 11-0 regular season record, but faces stiff competition from other teams in the conference.
These coaches are among the best in college football, and their teams will be battling it out for supremacy this season.
