A string of coordinated bomb and gun attacks has struck Colombia’s south-west, killing at least seven people and wounding over 50. The attacks targeted police posts, municipal buildings, and civilian targets in the city of Cali and nearby towns. Police reported using car bombs, motorcycle bombs, rifle fire, and a suspected drone to carry out the assaults.
The national police chief said two police officers were killed, while at least two civilians were also dead, with 12 others injured. Residents described seeing the aftermath of the attacks, including vehicles surrounded by debris and buildings damaged.
Experts point to a dissident faction of the Farc guerrilla group, known as the Central General Staff (EMC), as behind the attacks. Security expert Elizabeth Dickenson stated that the EMC’s goal may be to disrupt an ongoing military operation against their leader, Iván Mordisco, who is reported to have been injured in the past.
The government has warned the public to stay away from military and police installations, but stopped short of claiming responsibility for the attacks. The incident comes three days after a conservative senator was shot twice in the head at close range while campaigning in Bogotá.
