Colombia Hit by Wave of Explosions, At Least 7 Killed

A wave of explosions rocked southwest Colombia on Tuesday morning, killing at least seven people in an attack believed to target the country’s police. The attacks occurred in Cali and several towns in Cauca and Valle del Cauca departments.

At least two officers were among those killed, with 28 people injured, including civilians, military personnel, and police. The Colombian National Army reported that it has intelligence linking the attacks to the leader of guerrilla group Estado Mayor Central.

Estado Mayor Central has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but accused Colombia’s government of reneging on the peace process and issued tips to civilians on avoiding the crossfire.

The situation in Cali, Colombia’s third-largest city, is now under control, with security forces deployed throughout the city. The defense ministry said military forces prevented six attacks and captured two people preparing explosives.

Experts say the attacks demonstrate how criminal armed organizations are trying to pressure the government further to make more agreements or concessions. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has been urged by local officials to convene the country’s Security Council to respond to the current escalation of terrorism.

The blasts come days after prominent politician and presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot at a campaign event, leaving him in critical condition.
