Colombia’s northeastern region, particularly the border village of Tres Bocas, has become a hotspot of violence, leaving over 80 people dead and thousands displaced. The latest clashes between rebel groups, including the National Liberation Army (ELN) and FARC-EMC, have forced around 18,000 people to flee, with about 1,000 seeking shelter in Venezuela.
The region, which produces 15% of Colombia’s coca crop, has seen a surge in violence, with ELN rebels attacking civilians, accusing them of collaborating with the FARC-EMC. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has suspended peace talks with the ELN and announced plans to issue an emergency decree to bypass congressional approval.
The United Nations has condemned the killing of civilians, including former combatants who signed a 2016 peace agreement, and is calling for an immediate cessation of violence against civilians. The organization is also urging the ELN and other armed groups to respect civilians’ rights.
Thousands have fled to Venezuela in search of safety, with many fearing further violence. The region’s leader, Jaime Botero, described the situation as “desperate” and said many residents are afraid of firefights breaking out in rural areas. The escalating violence has raised concerns about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Colombia’s Catatumbo region.
