Colon Cancer Screening Saves Lives, Experts Say

Colorectal cancer screening is crucial for adults 45 and older, as it can help catch the disease in its early stages when it’s most treatable. Despite this, many people in the US and Michigan still aren’t getting screened due to factors such as inconvenience, transportation, and emotional concerns.

As a physician, Dr. Gregory Stevens has seen the impact of delayed detection on patients’ health. However, new non-invasive options like the Shield blood test are now available, making screening easier and more accessible. This test can be completed during a healthcare provider visit and is covered by Medicare and the US Department of Veterans Affairs Community Care Network.

New technologies can change the game in overcoming perceived barriers to screening. Yet, it’s essential for people to make a commitment to get screened. Healthcare providers and communities must do better to encourage more screenings, as early detection is key to survivorship.

This June, during National Cancer Survivor Month, it’s a great opportunity to remind ourselves that colorectal cancer doesn’t need to be a death sentence. With new screening options available, taking control of your health has never been easier.
