Colon Cancer Survivor Finds Strength in Advocacy

Holly Crawford, a mother of two from Charlotte, beat colon cancer at age 37 after being diagnosed with the disease. She recently spoke about her battle in an interview, sharing her experience and the importance of early detection.

Crawford was initially unaware of the symptoms, which led to a series of doctor visits and blood tests. Despite her concerns, doctors missed several opportunities to catch the issue earlier. It wasn’t until she underwent a colonoscopy that they found a tumor in her colon, which had spread to a smaller tumor and lymph nodes.

As a mother of two, Crawford’s experience was especially worrisome. She said battling cancer while raising children was daunting, but she remained focused on survival. After six months of chemotherapy, she made a full recovery.

Crawford credits her doctors for taking action when they finally noticed something wrong. “It could have ended a lot worse if I had ignored it or been ignored,” Dr. Brad Davis said. He emphasizes the importance of colon cancer screening for adults over 45 and those with a family history of the disease.

Now, Crawford is using her experience to help others. She participates in the Get Your Rear in Gear 5K to raise money for colon cancer research, education efforts, and patient support. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and supports survivors like Crawford.

The 2025 Get Your Rear in Gear 5K will take place on Saturday, March 22, in Charlotte.
