Colorado Completes EV Fast-Charging Corridors Program, Doubling Coverage Across State

Colorado and ChargePoint have completed the EV Fast-Charging Corridors program, adding DC fast chargers across six highway corridors. The state’s electric vehicle (EV) fast charger program now offers over 80 charging ports at 33 sites along highways across Colorado.

The initiative, funded with $10 million from the state and over $2 million in private contributions, has more than doubled Colorado’s corridor DC fast-charging coverage since 2019, when only 40% of highway corridors had access to fast chargers within 30 miles. This expansion provides a significant boost for EV drivers in the state.

The new ChargePoint charging locations include convenience stores, local visitor centers, and other public spaces where drivers can recharge their vehicles. Users can find all the charging sites on the ChargePoint app or website.

According to Rick Wilmer, CEO at ChargePoint, “This project is a testament to the leadership we’re seeing across the country at a state level to accelerate the build-out of a robust charging network for all EV drivers.” All 33 sites are now open and listed on the Colorado Energy Office’s website.

The completion of this program comes as federal funding for EV infrastructure initiatives, such as the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, may face uncertainty under the new administration. However, existing NEVI funds have already been distributed to states, and efforts to roll back support for EV charging stations and vehicles are not yet applicable.

Colorado’s EV Fast-Charging Corridors program is a model that other states can look to if they want to establish their own state-level programs. The program’s success demonstrates the importance of state leadership in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles.
