Colorado Grocery Store Workers Plan 2-Week Strike Against King Soopers

Thousands of workers at King Soopers grocery stores in Colorado will go on a two-week strike starting Thursday, citing unfair labor practices and lack of investment in wages. The United Food and Commercial Workers (UCFW) Local 7 union represents approximately 10,000 workers at 77 King Soopers locations across six counties.

The union says its contracts expired in January and contract negotiations began in October, but the company offered wage proposals that were never responded to by the union. Instead, UCFW Local 7 claims King Soopers leadership monitored their discussions with union staff, questioned members about bargaining, and threatened disciplinary action for wearing union gear or refusing to provide necessary information.

The National Labor Relations Board has cleared King Soopers of unfair labor practices during negotiations. However, King Soopers President Joe Kelley urges the union to reconsider its approach and prioritize fair pay and affordable groceries. The strike is expected to affect over 10,000 workers, but stores are likely to remain open despite the work stoppage.
