Colorado HIV Prevention Funding at Risk Amid Budget Crisis

A prominent non-profit in Colorado is sounding the alarm as federal funding for HIV prevention programs faces a significant threat due to budget cuts and mass layoffs within the Department of Health and Human Services. Vivent Health, which provides care to 3,700 people with HIV or at risk of contracting the virus, could lose up to $1.14 million in federal funding if the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s division of HIV prevention is cut. Colorado has already faced multiple funding cuts, including a loss of $250 million in federal grants for tracking diseases and improving mental health, which could exacerbate the issue. Experts warn that slashing HIV prevention funding would not only be wasteful but also lead to increased cases of HIV, disproportionately affecting communities of color, LGBTQ individuals, and those living in poverty.
