Colorado residents have spotted several rabbits with unusual growths and deformities, sparking concern over the health of these animals. However, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, these creatures are actually infected with a benign viral disease.
Cottontail rabbit papillomavirus is the culprit behind the unusual appearance of the affected rabbits. The virus can cause growths resembling warts or horns on the animals’ heads and bodies, but it cannot spread to other species.
Fortunately, most rabbits will overcome this infection on their own, and no treatment is available. To prevent further transmission, residents are advised to keep pet rabbits indoors if they spot infected wild rabbits in their area.
While these sightings may seem alarming, experts say that the affected rabbits pose little threat to human health. In fact, some find them fascinating and even beautiful.
“We’re so used to seeing normal-looking rabbits,” said Kara Van Hoose, a Colorado Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman. “It’s interesting to see something different.”
