A major rental company, Greystar Real Estate Properties, is facing two separate lawsuits from the Colorado Attorney General and the Department of Justice over allegations of charging local tenants hidden fees.
The lawsuits claim that Greystar is deceptively advertising rent prices and then charging additional fees to residents. However, the company denies these claims, stating that it conducts its business with integrity and that residents agree to all applicable fees in their leases.
The Colorado Attorney General, Phil Weiser, has issued a warning to other corporate landlords, stating that such conduct is illegal and will not be tolerated in Colorado. Weiser’s office is suing Greystar alongside the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), alleging deceptive business practices.
Greystar operates several locations in Colorado Springs and has accused software by the Department of Justice of being used for “illegal collusion” in the rental market. However, the company maintains that it has never engaged in anti-competitive practices.
The issue highlights concerns over rising housing costs in Denver and surrounding areas, where lawmakers have proposed legislation to prevent landlords from coordinating rent prices.
