Colorado has reported its first two deaths this year due to West Nile Virus, according to state data. In total, three Coloradans have died after contracting the disease so far this year. Last year saw no deaths, but in 2023, a deadly outbreak resulted in 51 fatalities.
“We’re deeply saddened by these recent deaths,” said Fremont County public health director Paula Buser. “It’s a reminder to take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses.” West Nile Virus is spread through infected mosquito bites and can cause serious health complications, especially for those over 60 with pre-existing medical conditions.
To protect themselves, people are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours, wear long sleeves and insect repellent, drain standing water, and be aware of the risk. So far this year, 41 cases have been reported in Weld, Boulder, and Larimer counties, with most typically occurring in August and September.
