Colts Coach Shane Steichen Hints at Imminent Decision in QB Battle

Colts coach Shane Steichen hinted that a decision on the quarterback position may be imminent after Saturday’s preseason loss to the Green Bay Packers. The battle between Anthony Richardson Sr. and Daniel Jones has been ongoing for months, with both players showcasing their skills during training camp.

Steichen described Richardson as “very close” to making a decision, adding that he will make the choice that benefits the team. However, he also emphasized the importance of consistency in communication, checks, and overall operation of the offense, which could play to Jones’ strengths.

Richardson has been under scrutiny since being drafted fourth overall in 2023, with concerns about his durability and inconsistency. Despite this, coaches and teammates have praised his progress, particularly in the quick passing game. However, Steichen noted Richardson’s struggles with routine plays, which he aims to improve on.

Jones, a seventh-year veteran, has been competing well during training camp, completing 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards against the Packers. When asked about his approach, Jones emphasized the importance of making consistent decisions and working on his skills.

Steichen acknowledged that this decision will be one of the most consequential in his third season as a head coach, with two first-round draft picks competing for the starting quarterback spot. Ultimately, he will make the choice he believes is best for the team.
