The Indianapolis Colts have hired former Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo to take over the team’s defense. The move comes after a disappointing season that saw the Colts struggle on defense, finishing 29th in yards allowed per game.
Anarumo, 58, brings experience and a fresh approach to the position. During his tenure with the Bengals, he deployed impressive defenses, including the unit’s performance in Super Bowl LVI, where his game plans were key to the team’s success despite losing to the Rams.
Colts coach is looking for change after last season’s struggles. Anarumo’s defensive philosophy differs from that of former coordinator Gus Bradley, who was known for using similar tactics week-in and week-out. Instead, Anarumo tailors his game plans to opponents’ weaknesses.
The new coordinator comes at a time when the team was also interviewing other candidates, including Dennis Allen, who is now joining the Chicago Bears as defensive coordinator. Anarumo’s hiring aims to shake up the team’s defensive strategy and improve performance. Star defensive tackle DeForest Buckner expressed frustration with last season’s struggles, saying that glimpses of the team playing well were overshadowed by poor performances against weaker opponents.
