Colts Name Daniel Jones Starting QB Over Anthony Richardson

Colts coach Shane Steichen has chosen Daniel Jones as the team’s starting quarterback, opting for the veteran free agent over first-round pick Anthony Richardson. Steichen praised Jones’ ability to communicate with teammates and his “veteran presence” on the field.

Jones signed a one-year contract worth $14 million in March and was initially expected to compete with Richardson. However, after Richardson’s strong training camp and preseason performance, Steichen said he needed to make minute factors clear. The decision is seen as a validation for Jones’ decision to join the Colts and gives him an opportunity to resurrect his career.

Richardson expressed no hard feelings and vowed to continue growing despite not winning the starting job. He believes he made progress in his preparation and knowledge of the offense, but still has room to improve. The team will now make a decision on Richardson’s fifth-year team option for 2027.

Steichen acknowledged that making this move might have long-term implications for Richardson, but prioritized what was best for the Colts in 2025.
