Columbia Sportswear Sues Columbia University Over Alleged Trademark Infringement

Outdoor apparel retailer Columbia Sportswear has filed a lawsuit against Columbia University, alleging trademark infringement and breach of contract. The company claims that the university’s merchandise, including items sold online, resembles its own clothing and can cause confusion among consumers.

Columbia Sportswear has been in business since 1938 and has agreements with various partners to use the “Columbia” name on their apparel. However, the company alleges that Columbia University breached this agreement by selling items without logos or other identifying features, leading to a similar blue color associated with both brands.

The lawsuit seeks to stop the sale of infringing merchandise, recall existing products, and donate any remaining goods to charity. Columbia Sportswear is also seeking triple the amount of actual damages determined by a jury.
