Columbia Sportswear has filed a lawsuit against Columbia University, claiming that the university’s merchandise is too similar to its own products. The retailer claims that the similarities may confuse shoppers and breach a deal made in 2023 between the two parties.
The agreement established how the word “Columbia” can be used on college merchandise. However, according to the lawsuit, the university allegedly began using the name without proper branding, such as a school logo or mascot, in 2024. The retailer also claims that the university’s bright blue garments are confusingly similar to its own products.
Columbia Sportswear is seeking to stop all sales of the university’s clothing that violate the agreement, recall previously sold items, and donate remaining stock to charity. The retailer is also seeking three times the amount of actual damages determined by a jury if its litigation is successful.
