Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) to Shine Brighter Than Venus Next Week

Comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) is expected to become brighter than Venus next week and may be the brightest comet of 2025. However, its proximity to the Sun poses a challenge for stargazers, as the best viewing opportunities will come when it’s further away from the Sun.

The comet has already reached brightness levels similar to stars like Antares and Spica but won’t be easily visible due to its location in the southern hemisphere. Unlike Venus, which can be seen in the evening sky after sunset, Comet C/2024 G3 will be best viewed when it’s at a distance of about 14 degrees from the Sun, making it difficult to spot during peak brightness.

Comet C/2024 G3 is classified as a “sungrazer” or “sunskirter,” which means it risks breaking apart if its orbit takes it too close to the Sun. Its extremely long and thin orbit will take it over 135,000 years before it returns, with changes in its orbit caused by planetary gravity likely extending this timeframe.

While some predictions suggest Comet C/2024 G3 might not live up to expectations, initial observations indicate it’s running ahead of projections. With a magnitude of -1.9 at its peak, it may outshine previous comets like C/2023 A3, which reached levels of -6.1 on January 13.

The best chance for stargazers lies in catching the comet around January 20, when its brightness will be lower but still potentially visible after astronomical twilight. However, viewing opportunities will be limited due to its southern hemisphere location and proximity to the Sun.

Astronomers note that comets’ brightness can be affected by skyglow, making it essential to consider this factor when attempting to spot these celestial events.
