A rare celestial event is approaching the skies above Colorado, offering stargazers a unique opportunity to spot a comet and multiple planets with the naked eye. Comet C/2024 G3, recently discovered last year, will be visible in the southern hemisphere but can also be seen in Colorado under optimal viewing conditions.
To increase chances of spotting this comet, find dark locations away from mountains and light pollution. A few days remain to observe the comet before it becomes too close to the sun, making the viewing window smaller. Clear skies are expected for the next couple of days, providing a brief opportunity to capture images or simply enjoy the view.
Besides the comet, several planets will be visible in the southwest direction around 7PM on January 13th, including Mars, which may appear as a bright star near the moon due to its proximity. This rare alignment is referred to as the “Planetary Parade,” where multiple planets appear on the same side of the sun despite not being technically aligned.
