Washington Commanders general manager Chris Ballard has sent a fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for receiver Deebo Samuel. The trade, which is pending physicals and will be official on March 12, gives Washington a versatile player who can line up as both a wide receiver and running back.
Samuel’s presence should lead to more targets and touches for him in his new role, and he’s set to earn $17.5 million this season before his contract expires. The move strengthens the Commanders’ offense under offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who should utilize Samuel’s skills effectively.
While Samuel joins a talented receiving corps that includes Terry McLaurin, the former receiver is unlikely to impact McLaurin’s value in fantasy football. McLaurin remains the team’s top receiver and will continue to run similar deep and intermediate routes. However, Samuel’s skillset could create more opportunities for him, particularly on run-pass option targets.
Samuel’s addition might also benefit quarterback Jayden Daniels, who gains a new target in his second year as starter. Daniels should see an expanded playbook with the arrival of Samuel, allowing him to utilize his skills to their fullest extent.
In contrast, Austin Ekeler’s fantasy value is likely to decrease due to Samuel’s emergence. Ekeler will face reduced targets and third-down touches in Washington, making him a less desirable option for fantasy managers.
On the other hand, tight end George Kittle should see an increase in short-yardage targets with Samuel no longer part of the 49ers’ offense. As one of the league’s top tight ends, Kittle offers a solid floor and high ceiling in redraft leagues.
