The Washington Commanders are set to return home after a long-standing deal between the team and the city was approved by the D.C. Council. The 9-3 vote paved the way for a football stadium at the site of RFK Stadium, where the franchise enjoyed its best days.
A $2.7 billion investment from the Commanders will be matched by $1 billion from the district, with the team covering cost overruns. The stadium is expected to open in 2030, hosting big events such as the Women’s World Cup in 2031.
Commander owner Josh Harris said the project is about revitalizing a critical part of the city, creating thousands of jobs and unlocking long-term economic benefits for the district. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser also expressed her support, saying it would bring instant job creation and economic benefits six years earlier than a mixed-use development.
The team will continue to train at its Ashburn, Virginia facility and have team headquarters in College Park, Maryland, while RFK Stadium will become a mixed-use facility with housing developments, a sports complex, and retail shops. The Commanders had previously considered staying at their current home in Landover, Maryland, but chose to focus on returning to RFK.
