Companies Must Post Total Prices Including Fees Under New FTC Rule

The Federal Trade Commission has finalized a rule requiring businesses to display the total price of live event tickets or short-term lodging in pricing and advertising. This means companies like Ticketmaster, Airbnb, and others must prominently show all fees, including any added at checkout. The goal is to prevent “junk fees” that surprise consumers with extra costs. The new rule was passed 4-1, with the sole opposing vote coming from President-elect Trump’s pick for FTC leader.

President Biden supports the rule, saying it helps protect consumers and competition while preserving flexibility for businesses. Critics argue the incoming administration should decide whether to enforce such rules. The rule is expected to save consumers around 53 million hours per year by avoiding time spent searching for total prices. It will take effect within 120 days.
