Papal thriller “Conclave” has emerged as a frontrunner for the British Academy Film Awards, securing 12 nominations in various categories. The film, starring Ralph Fiennes, leads the pack in the best film award category alongside five other titles.
However, the announcement of the nominations was subdued due to the recent wildfires in Los Angeles. Actor Will Sharpe and actress Mia McKenna-Bruce kicked off the event by expressing their condolences to those affected by the disaster.
BAFTA chair Sara Putt declined to comment on whether the ceremony might be impacted by the fires, citing a month’s time frame before the scheduled event. The five films nominated for best film award include “Conclave,” “Emilia Perez,” “The Brutalist,” “Anora,” and “A Complete Unknown.”
Other notable nominees in various categories include Hugh Grant for his role in “Heretic,” Colman Domingo for “Sing Sing,” and Sebastian Stan for his portrayal of Donald Trump in “The Apprentice.” The diversity of the nominations was praised by Putt, who highlighted that 14 first-time actors were included.
The BAFTA Film Awards will take place on February 16 at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted by David Tennant. With the Oscars just around the corner on March 3, the ceremony is expected to provide insight into potential winners.
As director Edward Berger reflected, “To feel their strength is very, very inspiring” – a sentiment shared by many in the industry amidst the devastation left by the wildfires.
