Congestion Pricing Takes Effect in NYC: Higher Fares for Rides

New York City’s congestion pricing plan has officially kicked off, imposing higher fares on rideshare services like Ubers and Lyfts, as well as yellow taxis. The charges vary by vehicle type: taxis will add $0.75 per trip, while Uber and Lyft riders will face an extra $1.50 fee.

Under the new rules, drivers who operate near Manhattan’s edges, such as along Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive and the West Side Highway, are exempt from congestion zone fees. However, officials aimed to avoid driving customers away from struggling yellow cab companies by reducing taxi surcharges to half the amount of ride-hailing services.

The plan aims to improve local air quality and boost infrastructure budgets but its impact on these goals is unclear. With higher fares for rides within the congested zone, New Yorkers are now more likely to opt for public transportation – or pay more for private rides.
