Congo Capital Floods Kill 33 People, Displace Hundreds

Torrential rains have swept through Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, killing at least 33 people and leaving hundreds more homeless. President Félix Tshisekedi has promised to help victims of the disaster, which is part of a longer pattern of flooding in the city due to climate change.

The country’s largest river, the Congo, which runs through Kinshasa, has reached its highest level in six decades, causing widespread flooding and destruction. Many homes were swept away overnight, leaving thousands without access to basic necessities like water.

The government has been criticized for its slow response to the disaster, with some residents accusing officials of being too slow to provide aid. The floods have also left many struggling with water shortages, as water treatment pumps in the city were overwhelmed by the flooding.

The situation is expected to worsen in coming weeks, with more heavy downpours forecast for Kinshasa and other parts of the country. The national meteorological agency has warned of further heavy rains, especially in the north and northeast regions.
