Congo Capital Kinshasa Floods Kill Over 30 People

Flooding in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital Kinshasa has killed around 30 people, authorities said on Sunday. The torrential rains over the weekend destroyed homes and roads, leaving thousands stranded.

The Ndjili River overflowed its banks, blocking the main national road and disrupting power supply to several neighborhoods. The Kinshasa Governor blamed illegal housing for some of the deaths and threatened to evict people from unplanned settlements.

A hydrologist warned that human activity had degraded the river’s capacity to contain floods over time. The flooding comes at a vulnerable moment for the country, with fighting in the east between Rwanda-backed rebels and government forces having killed over 7,000 people in the first two months of the year.
