Congo Conflict Spreads Violence and Destroys Healthcare

A recent surge in violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has led to devastating losses of life, displacement, and destruction of critical healthcare infrastructure. The World Health Organization (WHO) is on the ground, providing lifesaving medical supplies, supporting health workers, and coordinating emergency responses.

The situation remains tense, with hospitals and morgues overwhelmed. Reports indicate that over 1,300 people have died, and thousands more are injured. The risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and malaria has increased due to disrupted water supply lines. Over 70% of healthcare facilities in North Kivu province have been affected, with some completely destroyed.

The WHO-supported health clinic in North Kivu was temporarily occupied by armed groups, causing health workers to flee or work under threat. Cancer treatment services are also severely impacted due to a shortage of medicines and overburdened staff.

Pregnant women are unable to access safe delivery care due to insecurity, increasing the risk of maternal mortality. The mpox outbreak has been exacerbated, with 90% of patients in isolation units having fled for safety, making it difficult to provide care.

Malnutrition and disease are closely linked, particularly among children and pregnant women. A rapid assessment revealed a concerning rise in rape and other forms of gender-based violence among displaced persons.

The WHO is deploying emergency medical supplies and urging the Goma airport to be reopened to deliver critical resources. The organization also calls for humanitarian access, protection of health workers and facilities, and an end to attacks on healthcare.

Overall, the response requires $50 million to meet immediate health needs. The WHO urges the international community to support their efforts and provide peace to alleviate the suffering of the people in this region.
