Congo in Crisis: Regional Power Struggle Erupts

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces a grave situation reminiscent of the Second Congo War between 1998 and 2003. The M23 rebel group has gained significant territory, including key cities like Bukavu, under the support of Rwanda’s army. This development poses a threat to DRC President Felix Tshisekedi’s legitimacy, as he was not present at recent peace talks.

Rwanda’s interests in the region are driven by historical ties, economic factors, and security concerns. The country seeks influence and control over eastern DRC, using M23 as a buffer zone. Uganda has also deployed troops to Congo, primarily targeting the Allied Democratic Forces, but with some units now moving towards M23 rebels.

Burundi’s involvement is marked by rising tensions with Rwanda, with both countries supporting opposing rebel groups in eastern Congo. International pressure on Rwanda has been lacking, despite analysts pointing to its significance in resolving past conflicts.

A humanitarian crisis deepens as over 700,000 people have been displaced since the start of the year. The World Health Organization warns of a public health disaster unfolding. Urgent action is needed to prevent further escalation and protect the region’s stability.
