Conservative Think Tank Heritage Foundation Faces Internal Crisis

Conservative think tank Heritage Foundation is reeling from an internal crisis after its president defended Tucker Carlson’s interview with white nationalist Nick Fuentes, causing several high-profile staff members and fellows to resign in protest.

Robert P. George, a respected constitutional scholar and Princeton University professor, has resigned from the Heritage Foundation’s board due to President Kevin Roberts’ defense of the interview. George felt that Roberts failed to offer a full retraction of his comments, which were criticized for echoing antisemitic tropes.

The controversy sparked a backlash within the organization, with several members of Heritage’s National Task Force to Combat Antisemitism quitting en masse and other staff members publicly walking away. The turmoil has led to the departure of at least seven additional staff members, fellows, and task-force members, including distinguished fellow Chris DeMuth and senior visiting fellow Stephen Moore.

Roberts apologized for his comments, but they failed to stem the tide of resignations. His chief of staff also stepped down after reposting social media messages urging internal critics to quit if they were “so outraged.”

The crisis has intensified within the organization, with employees questioning whether Roberts can continue leading the group and expressing concerns that the controversy has damaged Heritage’s reputation.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Heritage Foundation will navigate this internal crisis and regain the trust of its staff, fellows, and members.
