Corey Walker Sentenced to 29 Years in Prison for Pop Smoke’s Murder

Corey Walker, the final person charged in connection with the 2020 Hollywood Hills killing of rap artist Pop Smoke, has been sentenced to 29 years in state prison. Walker pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and two counts of home-invasion robbery on February 5th.

The 20-year-old rapper, whose real name was Bashar Jackson, was shot by four suspects at a short-term rental home in the Hollywood Hills. The suspects were wearing masks and were last seen running from the scene. The victims’ identity was not publicly known, but their mother accepted awards for Pop Smoke’s album on his behalf.

Walker admitted to providing a 9mm firearm to one of the juvenile defendants involved in the crime. He also acknowledged researching the Los Angeles Police Department and the house where the shooting occurred.

The other three defendants were all charged in juvenile court due to their age at the time of the killing. One juvenile defendant was sentenced to remain in a juvenile facility until he turns 25 after admitting to first-degree murder, home-invasion robbery, and voluntary manslaughter charges.

Walker’s sentence could have been life in prison without parole if he had been tried and convicted on the original charges, which included murder and special-circumstance allegations.
