Council to only serve vegan food at future events
Calderdale Council in West Yorkshire has decided to only serve vegan food at its meetings and catered events. This decision was part of a larger food strategy policy for the borough.
The plan, proposed by Labour councillor Scott Patient, was approved despite some opposition from Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors. They argued that it was an unfair imposition on attendees who may not want to eat vegan food.
However, Green councillor Elaine Hey welcomed the move, saying it was “hugely symbolic” and showed leadership on climate change. Calderdale Council has committed to achieving net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2038 and has already adopted a climate change emergency policy.
Labour councillor Scott Patient said the decision was about inclusivity as well as reducing the council’s carbon footprint. He estimated that the current spend on catering is under £2,000 a year and predicted that serving vegan food could also have financial benefits.
