Coach Raheem Morris says veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins’ presence at the Atlanta Falcons’ mandatory minicamp is not an issue. Cousins was initially absent during voluntary offseason team activities, citing a desire to be released or traded to start, but Morris believes his situation will resolve itself.
Morris stated that Cousins is a “high-quality individual” who understands he’s the backup quarterback. The coach expressed confidence in second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who has been deemed the starter since last season. Morris also downplayed any concerns about distractions from Cousins’ presence, saying he appreciates Penix both as a person and player.
Cousins himself said he won’t dwell on his situation, focusing instead on being the best backup he can be. The quarterback acknowledged his desire to start but emphasized the importance of his current role. He expressed support for Penix and doesn’t feel the need to intervene.
Morris remains optimistic that Cousins will remain as the Falcons’ No. 2 quarterback this season. The team’s interest in Cousins has diminished, particularly with Aaron Rodgers signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers. With a no-trade clause, Cousins would have to approve any trade deal.
