COVID-19 cases are increasing nationwide, particularly in the Southeast, South, and West Coast, according to the CDC. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a rise in COVID-19 activity across many states in these regions.
In Tennessee, emergency room visits for COVID-19 have been classified as “very low” but are increasing slightly. Wastewater levels in the state are also categorized as “very low.” CDC data indicates that COVID-19 cases are likely growing in Tennessee and 15 other states, including Alaska, California, Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.
The latest strain of COVID-19, variant NB.1.8.1, is now dominant across the US. This variant was first detected in China in January but has only recently become a significant contributor to new infections in the US. The CDC estimates that it accounted for 43% of COVID-19 cases nationwide during the two-week period ending June 21.
Symptoms associated with this variant include a painful sore throat, commonly referred to as “razor blade throat.” While the CDC has not identified any unique symptoms for this variant, it is considered a slightly upgraded version of the formerly prominent LP.8.1 variant.
Tennesseans can schedule COVID-19 testing at various pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens. It’s essential to follow proper protocols and guidelines when seeking medical attention or testing.
