A summer surge of COVID-19 cases has begun in the Tri-State area, according to health officials. Sampling of wastewater from Northern Kentucky, Southeast Indiana, and Southwest Ohio reveals an increase in virus presence. Philip Graham, informatics and surveillance program manager at Northern Kentucky Health, notes that wastewater surveillance can predict rising case counts.
“We’re seeing a growing case count in Kentucky,” Graham said. “While hospitalizations are low now, we expect them to rise.” Graham attributes the potential surge to people’s immunity waning due to the relatively mild winter of COVID-19 over the past couple of years.
Graham advises getting a COVID booster, even if it was not done before last winter. Getting vaccinated remains crucial in preventing infection. Key precautions include staying home when sick, wearing masks in crowded places, and taking travel precautions.
