COVID-19 Cases Surge Nationwide in Summer Spike

COVID-19 cases are on the rise across the US, with nine states already experiencing increased infections and 16 more likely to follow suit. According to the CDC, respiratory diseases such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV remain low overall but emergency room visits for COVID-19 have seen a significant increase.

Experts point to several factors contributing to the surge, including the emergence of new variants like NB.1.8.1, which spread more easily among people. Additionally, fewer people are getting vaccinated due to changing recommendations and concerns about vaccine effectiveness. However, most experts agree that vaccines remain safe and effective in preventing severe disease.

The CDC reports COVID-19 cases are growing in Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. The dominant variant remains Omicron, with NB.1.8.1 responsible for 43% of new infections as of June. While the vaccine may not target the exact strain currently circulating, it remains effective against severe disease due to its similarity in branching to recent variants.

As cases continue to rise, health authorities urge people to stay informed and follow evidence-based recommendations, including getting vaccinated regularly to maintain protection against severe disease.
