The US is experiencing a surge in wastewater levels for COVID-19, with the Western states showing the highest activity, according to a CDC map. This suggests that the virus may be spreading within communities earlier than previously thought.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that COVID-19 cases are growing across 45 states, with only four states showing no change in cases. The variant XFG, known as “Stratus,” is gaining prominence, accounting for 14% of cases in June.
While the WHO has listed Stratus on its watchlist due to concerns over its potential evading immune defenses, it remains a low public health risk and vaccines are expected to remain effective against symptomatic disease. The common COVID-19 symptoms remain unchanged.
As the virus continues to mutate, experts warn that another summer of illness may be in store as vaccination wanes and natural immunity decreases.
