COVID Activity Rises Across US, Flu Deaths Increase

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a rise in COVID activity last week, with wastewater detections increasing to moderate levels in most states. The West had the highest levels of detection, followed by the South. The CDC also noted rising test positivity rates, with 8.6% seen nationwide, higher in the West and Southwest.

Emergency department visits for COVID-19 are up 19% compared to the previous week, with increases reported in many states. Despite this, deaths have declined slightly. In contrast, flu activity is growing, with one more pediatric death reported, bringing the season’s total to 267. Notably, 90% of unvaccinated children who died from flu were not fully vaccinated, compared to 82% last season.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) tracking remains low, but the CDC’s data suggests that COVID infections may be growing in most states, with the highest levels detected in the West and South.
