COVID Cases Rise Amid US Summer Wave

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows COVID-19 cases are increasing across more than half of the US, with a surge in several states, particularly in the South and Southeast.

As summer approaches its midpoint, the CDC is reporting growing cases of the virus in at least 26 states, including Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and 10 other states. The agency notes that while there is an uptick in COVID-19 cases, overall hospitalizations for acute respiratory illnesses remain low.

In comparison to previous years, trends in COVID-19 deaths, emergency room visits, and positive cases continue downward. However, the US has seen a summer wave of higher COVID-19 cases every year since 2020.

The CDC’s latest data suggests that COVID-19 cases are likely growing in more than a dozen states, including California, Georgia, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. Only one state, Montana, is likely experiencing declining cases.

Overall, while the surge in COVID-19 cases may seem concerning, it’s essential to note that hospitalizations remain low, and the trend of decreasing COVID-19 deaths continues.
