Covid Linked to Accelerated Artery Ageging Only Among Women

Researchers from Université Paris Cité in France investigated how Covid-19 affects the cardiovascular system, specifically artery stiffness, which increases naturally with age. A study of 2390 people aged 50 on average from 16 countries found that among women, a known SARS-CoV-2 infection was linked to stiffer arteries. The severity of the infection seemed to correlate with increased artery stiffness. Women who were hospitalised with Covid-19 had a vascular age that was around five years older than uninfected counterparts, rising to 7.5 years for those in intensive care.
