Cowboys COO Stephen Jones Talks Contracts, Coaching Staff, and More Ahead of 2025 NFL Combine

The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for the 2025 NFL combine with COO/co-owner Stephen Jones juggling contract talks, player evaluation, and duties on the league’s competition committee. In a recent media session, Jones discussed several key topics, including Micah Parsons’ extension, DeMarcus Lawrence’s future, free agency, the backup quarterback position, Zack Martin’s retirement, and the coaching staff under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

Jones began by addressing Micah Parsons’ contract extension, stating that every negotiation is unique and that he doesn’t know what extenuating circumstances may have affected their talks. He also confirmed that DeMarcus Lawrence will have more discussions with the team in the coming week but didn’t want to speculate on his future.

When asked about being “selectively aggressive” in free agency, Jones emphasized that it gives them options and allows them to evaluate all avenues for player acquisition. The Cowboys are looking to maintain a strong backup quarterback position, which they plan to assess with the upcoming draft and coach Schottenheimer’s guidance.

Jones also spoke highly of new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, praising his ability to communicate effectively with the staff and lead the process of hiring coaches. He emphasized that aligning the staff’s vision for players with the front office is crucial, and he believes they have a strong relationship with Will McClay, who oversees player acquisition.

In addition, Jones discussed the team’s involvement in the competition committee, focusing on increasing replay assist technology to improve accuracy and tweaking the kickoff rule.
