Wildlife officers in Chicago made a surprising discovery in the refrigerated aisle of an Aldi grocery store on Monday. A video shared on X shows two officers carefully removing a coyote from the shelves by its tail. The incident occurred at the North Kedzie Avenue store on January 13.
According to Stan Gehrt, with the Cook County Coyote Project, coyotes often pick unusual hiding spots in an attempt to evade humans and wildlife experts. The organization reminded residents that January through March is coyote mating season, during which they may be more active and visible.
The coyote was safely taken to Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation for assessment. If deemed healthy, it will be released back into the wild. There were no reported injuries from the incident.
Police encouraged people to remain alert and avoid feeding coyotes, as these animals typically try to avoid humans but can become aggressive if habituated to human food.
