A scuffle broke out at the end of Creighton’s 71-62 victory over UConn in a Big East tournament semifinal on Friday night. The confrontation happened after Jamiya Neal threw down a needless dunk with seven seconds left, which sparked a reaction from Huskies guard Hassan Diarra.
Diarra was not pleased with Neal’s move, calling it “disrespectful to the game of basketball.” In response, Neal waved his arms to fire up Creighton fans. The officials quickly intervened, and both Neal and Diarra received double technicals. UConn reserve forward Jayden Ross was also ejected from the game.
Creighton coach Greg McDermott approached UConn’s coach Dan Hurley to shake hands before the incident occurred. However, a confrontation between UConn assistant Luke Murray and McDermott did happen in the stands, with Murray appearing to exchange unpleasant words with the Creighton coach.
Despite the drama, Creighton advanced to face sixth-ranked St. John’s in the title game on Saturday night. The Bluejays are now one step closer to winning their first Big East championship since joining the league in 2013-14.
