Baba Dar, the patriarch of the Dars, amassed his fortune through a series of dubious business ventures. His first season on Hulu, Deli Boys, follows the life of his two adult sons, Raj and Mir, as they try to claim their rightful place in the family empire.
Raj, played by Saagar Shaikh, is a party-loving “twin flame” enthusiast who squanders money on drugs. In contrast, Mir, played by Asif Ali, has an MBA and a high-maintenance fiancĂ©e, Bushra. However, when their father’s legitimate business is shut down due to white-collar crimes, the brothers must rebuild his empire using his only asset: a small deli.
As they navigate the world of crime, the Dar brothers discover that their family’s operations were more extensive than they initially thought. Lucky Auntie and Ahmad Uncle, who have been running errands for Baba, are revealed to be high-ranking officials in the family business. A mismatched pair of federal agents is hot on their heels, tracking their every move.
Deli Boys takes a lighthearted approach to its portrayal of organized crime, often relying on slapstick humor and absurd situations. However, beneath its comedic surface lies a show that truly cares about its characters. The relationships between the Dars are genuine and nuanced, making it impossible not to become invested in their stories.
The cast shines, particularly Poorna Jagannathan as Lucky Auntie, who delivers a standout performance as a ruthless but loyal crime boss. With Deli Boys, Hulu has added another great addition to its lineup of crime comedies that blend humor with heart.
