Crozer Health System Closure Imminent: 2,651 Workers Laid Off

The Prospect Medical Holdings-owned health system, Crozer Health, has announced its definitive closure, despite recent reprieves and last-minute cash influxes. The decision will result in the permanent layoff of approximately 2,651 workers across eight facilities.

Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital were among those deemed unviable for sale. Prospect Medical Holdings had been working with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office to find new owners but ultimately failed to secure a buyer. The company also learned that an offer from the University of Pennsylvania Health System, which would have provided $5 million in funding, fell through.

The closure announcement means that patients at Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital will need to transition to other healthcare facilities. The receivership has expressed disappointment that alternative solutions could not be reached and will file closure notices as soon as possible.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has criticized Prospect Medical Holdings for prioritizing profits over patient care, stating that the company’s actions have led to the loss of critical healthcare services for Delaware County residents. The governor plans to work with local partners to support affected workers and ensure that patients continue to receive quality care.

The mayor of Upper Darby Township has announced plans to explore alternative emergency services models, aiming to provide sustainable and high-quality EMS service to residents.
