CS:GO Mod “Classic Offensive” Hit by Valve’s Block

A highly ambitious Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) mod aiming to bring back the classic feel of Counter-Strike 1.6 has been blocked by Valve, leaving its developers and fans disappointed. The project, titled “Counter-Strike: Classic Offensive,” spent nearly eight years in limbo before being rejected for Steam release.

Developed since 2016, Classic Offensive sought to recreate the nostalgic experience of CS 1.6 with classic weapons, physics, audio effects, and more within the modern Source engine used for CS:GO. The project was supported by the CS:GO modding community and even made it through Valve’s Steam Greenlight program in 2017.

However, progress on the Steam release has come to a standstill. In October 2024, the team behind Classic Offensive received an automated message from Valve declaring that the Steamworks app for the mod had been retired without explanation. The lack of feedback was described as “a worse form of a Cease and Desist,” leaving the team frustrated.

Valve’s apparent reluctance to support Classic Offensive is odd, given its history of welcoming fan-made projects based on other IPs. The CS:GO mod’s developers will try to get back in touch with Valve and related companies to gain positive traction for their project.

This marks a significant setback for the fans who yearn for the classic Counter-Strike experience. Nevertheless, all hope is not lost, as the team behind Classic Offensive aims to revive their efforts and secure a proper Steam release.
