Cubs Trade Juan Bello to Astros for Veteran Closer Ryan Pressly

The Cubs have acquired All-Star closer Ryan Pressly from the Houston Astros in a major trade, marking another significant move this offseason. Pressly, who had a no-trade clause due to his 10-and-5 rights, agreed to the deal after sources confirmed it. The deal involves cash compensation offsetting Pressly’s $14 million salary.

Pressly joins the Cubs with an impressive career ERA of 2.81 across seven seasons with the Astros, including a World Series victory in 2022. However, his performance has declined, with his strikeout rate dropping each season and his velocity decreasing over time.

The deal comes as the Cubs seek to bolster their bullpen, adding depth while also benefiting economically from part of Pressly’s contract being offset by the Astros’ payroll concerns. The team hopes Pressly can return to his previous form in a closer role with the Cubs, aiming to round out their bullpen and provide a competitive edge this season.
