A US Attorney has accused CVS Pharmacy of ignoring red flags in the opioid crisis, prioritizing profits over safety and repeatedly filling unlawful prescriptions. The allegations come after two Rhode Island mothers lost their sons to opioid addiction within six years.
Elise Reynolds, a mother who lost two sons to opioid overdose, believes corporations like CVS played a significant role in fueling the epidemic. She said her sons’ struggles with addiction were a daily battle they would never win.
The US Department of Justice and Attorney Zachary Cunha echoed Reynolds’ sentiments, stating that CVS repeatedly ignored warning signs and filled prescriptions from doctors known to be responsible for overdoses. CVS has denied the claims, citing efforts to reduce opioid prescriptions by 45% during former President Helena Foulkes’ tenure.
However, Cunha emphasized that the issue was not a mere oversight but systemic negligence. Reynolds believes that holding corporations accountable is only part of the solution and wishes they would help individuals recover from addiction.
